Actually, I have not decided really whether I agree with this or not, I am still thinking about it deeply. It is an article I read from a website, and whether you will agree or with it or not, we cannot doubt that at the very least, some of the arguments have great merit.
Let me give you the salient points...the question: Should small towns put up a major casino to augment the municipal chest? It could be answered by another question: "Who exactly would be patronizing it?"
Casinos' revenues depend on the
customer base it would be relying upon. Actually, if the patrons would be residents from the outside, the place would reap the benefits. Think about this, Vegas probably would still be an obscure desert place if not for the multitude of gamblers who put in the cash via their gambling.
According to one expert from the University of Nevada, if majority of the gambling visitors originate from out of town's borders, that casino would contribute positively to the stimulation of that specific local economy- well said, and this is a person who knew whereof he spoke. On the other hand, if a casino (however big it may be) is situated in a big city, it may be a totally different story. If most of the patrons are locals, then what would happen is that local currencies would in effect just be recycled.
